Sylvan Is On the Move Posted Mar 17, 2010
Sylvan Acres Ministry Update
Sylvan Is On the Move
Although the camping ministry of Sylvan Acres Ministry has been silent for the past few seasons, Sylvan is still fully devoted to the heart of camping ministry – Invite Faith, Cultivate Leaders, and Be Active in Mercy. After months of prayer, the Lord has confirmed to the Sylvan Board of Directors that this will be best realized through a community that is active in ministry year round. One key element of this community will be the teaching and modeling of creation care.
Over the past few months the Sylvan Board and friends have been working on a key step in the new direction of Sylvan Acre Ministries – selling the Sylvan property. The board met with a consultant who helped clarify the way forward including setting vision, selling the property, searching for a new property and a seeking a director. We had two offers on the property (unsolicited interest!) and eventually sold it to Teen Challenge – a ministry that will bring a much needed addictions recovery center to Vancouver Island.
The Way Ahead
The Board is now actively seeking an Executive Director. We believe that the next step of planning will need to involve the person who will be most directly involved in implementing that planning. This process will be done through the Canadian Baptist of Western Canada and will be open to all qualified applicants.
How You Can Be Involved
Please be praying for the new board and for the search for an Executive Director. The position is posted and we are casting a wide net. Closing date for application is March 26, 2010. Also, we will begin shortly to search for a new piece of property. We will be looking for something that lends itself to ranching and creation care (natural setting.) We are looking in the region between Nanaimo and Victoria, mainly the Cowichan Valley. If you have any suggestions, please let us know.
If you would like to be on our monthly email list please contact us. We will keep you updated and invite you to join the continuing vision of Sylvan Acres Ministry.

In the event that a decision to dissolve the VIA Society is not made at the June 13 meeting, this email also provides notice that there will be a call for nominations to fill vacant VIA officer positions as the terms of the present VIA officers expires on that date.

Sylvan Ministries Update 2009 Posted Mar 02, 2009
Greetings from the newly formed, but as of yet, unofficial Board:
To give you a brief background, in May of 2008 VIA passed the following mandate:
Mandate: We recommend that VIA release the dream
and the future of Sylvan Acres Ministry to the CBWC Camp Committee, and that
a local nominating team be given the authority to set up a board with the
mandate to hire a Director.
The key question is: how do we do to Invite Faith, Cultivate
Leaders &/or be Active in Mercy in ways
the churches of Vancouver Island cannot do on their own?
What are the deliverables: general vision and a capable, resourced leader.
What
will mark success: sustainability and excellent delivery of ministries/services.
From there a committee was struck and met through the summer to search through
the VIA churches for willing and capable Spirit-led people to for the new Sylvan
Board. By December of 2008, 5 people were selected by the committee to act
as the Sylvan Board.
Nora Cedar – First Baptist (Victoria)
Aaron Baxter – The Forge (Victoria)
Pastor Rob Filgate – New Life (Duncan)
Norm de Wit – New Life (Duncan)
Tim Neal – New Life (Duncan) Replaced Garry Bruce who resigned.
The New Board is unofficial until VIA holds its next meeting to transfer responsibility
to the board and as of yet cannot make any decisions.
However, we have been meeting and praying and gaining vision for what we believe
are task will be. Soon, we will post this new vision and get word out to the
churches.
